An ocean-going language

Liguria has many monuments. One, however, cannot be seen: it is made of words, built by generations, one voice at a time. It is Ligurian, the language of Genoa, the Ligurian Rivieras and the inland valleys. Genoese – zeneise to those who speak it – has served for centuries as its prestige and reference variety.

But this monument has never stood still. Born on a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea, it travelled for centuries, from one shore of the Mediterranean to another and then across the ocean. It carried Liguria out into the world and brought the world back into Liguria. Every encounter left a trace.
